Charles Le Maire Original Artwork Sketches And Notes - Charles Le Maire was considered the greatest Costume Designer in Hollywood History. Legendary three-time Oscar© winner (and 13 Oscar© nominations), he is credited for establishing the high-watermark of motion picture costume design, as well as famously creating the personal gowns for most of the greatest actresses and world leaders of his time. But Le Maire was also known as a true Renaissance man. Starting as a song-and-dance man in 1920's vaudeville, he was quickly discovered by the great producer Florenz Ziegfeld, and soon became the most sought after costume designer on Broadway, at one time working on over a dozen hit shows on the Great White Way at once, including productions for Ziegfeld, Oscar Hammerstein II and the Marx Brothers. He soon moved to Hollywood, where he became its greatest and most respected costume designer. Through his years, especially as the top executive designer for 20th Century Fox, Le Maire continued to broaden his talents in a plethora of other endeavors including inventions and designs from everything from unique sets and props , to his own line of ground-breaking clothing, to original artwork which is still exhibited in major museums, including the LACMA and Hammer in Los Angeles, and the Guggenheim in New York, as well as in some of the most prestigious private collections around the world. This is a recently discovered treasure trove of astonishingly fascinating original Le Maire artwork studies, ideas and sketches. It includes his famous "line drawing" nudes, botanical studies, still-life's, character studies and landscapes. They are all his originals in ink, pen, charcoal, pencil, and other mediums. Also included are two personal original sketchbooks filled with his pencil drawings of nature studies and still-life's including his famous series of drawings from his home in Wildwood, New Mexico (one of the sketchbooks has "The Drawings Of Wildwood" written on the cover in his handwriting), which, like many of the sketches and studies became the basis for some of his most famous paintings. As an extra added bonus is 18 rare first prints and original art-work of his well-known and highly sought after Christmas Cards. Please note that the cover of the "Drawings for Wildwood" sketchbook is detached. The sketches and drawings also include copious notes written by Le Maire. A true historical find!
