Vietnam-era flight suit personally-owned and -worn by veteran Space Shuttle astronaut Charles ‘Lacy’ Veach, who served for 14 years as a United States Air Force fighter pilot before joining NASA in 1984 as part of NASA Astronaut Group 10, a group endearingly nicknamed ‘The Maggots.’ The gray flight suit, size medium regular, retains the original Cowington Industries manufacturer’s label to inner collar, which dates the suit to September 29, 1963. The flight suit features metal captain bars to shoulders, and a 63rd Tactical Fighter Squadron patch to the right chest. The left chest bears a red patch with embroidered pilot’s wings and jump wings over his name, rank, and service branch: “Lacy Veach, Capt., USAF.” Below the back collar area is an embroidered U.S. Air Force Patch. Interestingly, this flight suit was modified by Veach, who trimmed the sleeves and turned this into a rather uncommon ‘short-sleeved’ flight suit. Included is an official color 8 x 10 NASA lithograph of Veach in his light blue Shuttle suit, signed and inscribed in black felt tip, “To Nancy Page—with all of my very best wishes! Lacy Veach.” In fine condition, with expected wear from use. Accompanied by two official NASA photos of the crews of STS-39 and STS-52, both of which depicts Veach.

After receiving his pilot wings at Moody Air Force Base and then attending fighter gunnery school at Luke Air Force Base, Veach over the next 14 years served as a USAF fighter pilot, flying the F-100 Super Sabre, the General Dynamics F-111, and the F-105 Thunderchief, on assignments in the United States, Europe, and the Far East, including a 275-mission combat tour of Vietnam. During his NASA career, Veach served as a mission specialist on flights STS-39 and STS-52, accruing over 436 hours in space.
