ALS signed “C. L. Dodgson,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 3.5 x 5.5, November 2, 1890. Letter to Elizabeth Wordsworth. In full: “I am quite ashamed of having caused you so much trouble in explaining all your Rules at such length. They seem very judicious, & are, I doubt not, very necessary.

“This is on another topic. The Oxford University Musical Union have invited me to their concert, to be given in Ch[rist] Ch[urch] Hall at 2.15 on Tuesday, November 11. Kindly enclosing a second ticket that I might take a friend. I told them I did not propose going myself, but would be very grateful if they would transfer my ticket to my niece (who I was sure would appreciate the music) & allow me to fill in the second ticket with the name of some chaperon, in case she could not find one who was already provided with a ticket & this they have kindly done.

“Several questions now arise: (1): Can you so arrange as to allow Edith to attend the concert? (I am presuming on her willingness so to do!) (2) Do you know of any one, already provided with a ticket with whom you would trust Edith to go, & who would be willing to take her? If you do, I think I cannot fairly use the 2nd ticket, but ought to return it to the Committee. If not then, (3) Will you accept the 2nd ticket for yourself & take Edith with you? Or can you find someone who will accept it & will take charge of her? In either case I must know the name in order to inscribe it on the ticket.”

In very fine condition. Dodgson’s flowing purple script enhances his considerate effort to provide his niece Edith with a musical evening and a suitable chaperon. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
