Delightful ALS signed “C. L. Dodgson,” one page both sides, 7 x 4.25, May 26, 1896. Letter to "Miss Hope," in full: "Beatrice Hatch tells me that you are a resident in Oxford, & that you would like to pay another visit to my rooms. This would be a pleasure to me also, specially as I understand from her that you have been an invalid, & have only lately been able to get about. But she was not able to tell me whether you were one who (like her, & like any other ladies of my acquaintance) would regard me as a sufficient chaperon for such a visit. I am a great believer in parties of the unconventional number of two: & Beatrice has been, on many occasions, my only guest. If such a prospect does not alarm you, I shall be very glad to call & arrange to fetch you down, some afternoon, for tea: & you can then tell me how much walking you are able to do, & whether we could manage it by using the tram-car for going & returning." In fine condition, with a central vertical fold. Late in life, Dodgson understandably managed his contacts with young ladies and female acquaintances quite carefully.
