Auction Date:2010 Jan 13 @ 10:00 (UTC-05:00 : EST/CDT)
Location:5 Rt 101A Suite 5, Amherst, New Hampshire, 03031, United States
American lawyer (1841–1882) who, frustrated in his attempt to secure an ambassadorship, assassinated President James Garfield in 1881. Excellent fountain pen signature, “Charles Guiteau, June 29, 1882,” on an off-white 6.75 x 4 album page. In fine condition, with light soiling and a bit of mild edge toning.
Guiteau was writing a lot in prison this June day—just 24 hours before his execution. On the day he signed this page, Guiteau also prepared his Last Will and Testament, in which he gave instructions for the disposition of his remains and identified a request that a book on his life be published. The following afternoon, with his affairs in order, Guiteau spoke his last words via a poem written sometime prior to his hanging, although a request that an orchestra play at the execution had been denied. Without doubt, one of the final signatures from the pen of a dastardly part of American history.
