<Our item number 119895><B>Charles II.</B> &#40;1630-1685&#41; King of England, Scotland, and Ireland &#40;1660-1685&#41;. After his father, Charles I, was executed in 1649, he went into exile until the Protectorate under Oliver Cromwell&#39;s son, Richard, collapsed and General George Monck invited him to return to England as King. The period of his reign is referred to as the Restoration. He was known as the &#34;Merry Monarch.&#34; Fine; light toning and soiling; seal tear on address leaf affects nothing.<BR><BR>DS &#40;&#34;Charles R&#34;&#41; as King, 1p plus integral address leaf, 12¼&#34; x 8&#34;, Whitehall, 1661 Sept. 14. To the governor of the town and garrison of Dunkirk, which had been ceded by the French to Oliver Cromwell during his Protectorate &#40;1653-1658&#41;. Charles orders the governor to collect unpaid levies, by force, if necessary, due under the Articles of Surrender signed by the French.
