English Civil War broadside appointing Alderman Pennington the new Lord Major of London. His predecessor, Sir Richard Gurney was: ''…put out of his said office by vertue of a Censure of the Lords in the High Court of Parliament…'' Dated 20 August 1642, the broadside makes no secret of Parliament's mounting conflict with King Charles: ''…Whereas the King, seduced by wicked councell, doth make war against his Parliament and people…forces both of horse and foot…are levied and raised by several persons, and His Majesties good subjects are most cruelly robbed, spoyled, and slain…'' Broadside printed for Daniell Bradley. Charles was beheaded in 1649 and England abolished the monarchy until 1660. Measures 8.5'' x 12.5''. Foxing, toning and creasing. Slightly irregularly trimmed edges. Mounted to paper to an overall size of 11.25'' x 18.5''. Very good.
