Charles I DS
"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Historically important King Charles I document signed, banishing his senior General and nephew, Prince Rupert of the Rhine, out of England after the Royalist defeat at Bristol. This official passport provides Rupert safe passage to ''ye parts beyond ye seas'', euphemistically acquiescing to the Parliamentarian demand for Rupert's expulsion from England. Document (handwritten by George Digby, Charles' ''evil genius) reads in part: ''…CHARLES by ye Grace of God Kings of England, Scotland, France & Ireland, Defender of ye Faith…To all Admiralty, Vice-Admiralty, Governors & Captains of Ports, Shipps & Forts. Majors, Sheriffs, Justices of Peace…Bailiffs, Constables…Whereas we have granted…licence unto our Nepueu Prince Rupert to pass fro [?] Dominion into ye parts beyond ye Seas…therefore I will command every of you, not only to permit him with all his Servants, horses & all his necessarys to pass by you & embarque at any of ye Ports within…Dominions…to transport his wife accordingly; but like wife to afford him…fitting accommodation in his…journey…'' Signed atop document ''Charles R'' and by Digby at the conclusion. Dated 1645 in period ink upon verso. Single page document measures 7.5'' x 11.75''. One small hole and small tears along one fold. Near fine condition.
