Charles I (1625-49) gold Crown. S-2711. Known in its day as 5 Shillings, this was struck at the Tower Mint under the king's control, 1627-28. Castle mm, #71. Choice XF for issue, subdued original luster, normal somewhat double-struck letters, but a nice little portrait and seldom found so fine as this lovely piece. Considering King Charles' fate some two decades after he had this coin made, its reverse legend, translated from the Latin "CULTORES SUI DEUS PROTEGIT" to "God protects his worshippers," has a cruel irony.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
