Autograph letter signed by Charles Guiteau, dated 16 November 1881 from Washington DC. President Garfield's assassin writes: “I am on trial for my life. I formely [sic] practiced law in New York and Chicago, & I propose to take an active part in my own defense as I know more about my inspiration & views in this case than any one. My brother-in-law George Scoville Esq is my only counsel, and I hereby appeal to the legal profession of America for aid. I want two or three first-class criminal lawyers to assist in my defense. I expect to have money shortly so I can pay them. I shall get it partly from the settlement of an old matter in New York, & partly from the sale of my book, and partly from public contributions to my defense. My defense was published in the New York Harld [sic] Oct 6. and in my speech published November 15 (yesterday.) any well known lawyers of criminal capacity desiring to assist in my defense will please without delay telegraph to George Scoville Washington D.C. If for any reason an application be refused the name will be withheld from the public.” One page measuring 8” x 11.75”. Right edge creased, with light separation at edges of two folds and bottom edge cut off. Partial fingerprints to lower margin. Excellent condition.
