A remarkable letter from Charles Goodnight to his boss, Mrs. Cornelia Adair of the J. A. Ranch. Goodnight and John Adair formed a partnership to establish and operate the famous J.A. Ranch. The letter appears to be written for Mrs. Adair’s account of her experiences in the American West, which was published in England in 1918. The letter details the geography of their 500 mile journey from Trinidad, Colorado to Texas. Written on “The Mercantile Company… Goodnight, Texas” letterhead, it is titled “Mrs. C. Adair’s First Trip to the Panhandle.” Includes great lines like, “On the way down they thought they discovered Indians, which proved to be U.S. troops.” And, “Now, Mrs. Adair, you know I do not spell English correctly, please do not hold me responsible for the spelling of the Spanish names used.” Typed and hand signed in pencil. Rough edges, small stain and fading at bottom not affecting type or signature, shows folds.
