Charles Fredrick Lowcock was essentially a genre painter, but he also produced a number of studies of classically attired girls in gardens or interiors. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1878 to 1904, where titles included 'A Vestal', 'A love Letter', and 'A dancing Girl'. His work was also to be seen at Suffolk Street and other London galleries.
This painting depicts a domestic scene of a mother warming something in the fire to feed to her children. This painting on canvas has been mounted on masonite and measures 11 1/2" X 10", the frame measures 17" X 19".
Condition of the painting is good aside from being mounted on masonite there are no tears or holes. Although the background is dark the main figures a visible and well done. The frame is probably original to the painting, it does have some loss to the plaster work. (8)
