Charles Dodgson ALS
"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Charles Dodgson, more famously known by his pen name Lewis Carroll, autograph letter signed, dated 1 August 1896 from East Bourne, England. In a very carefully worded letter, the 64-year old author apologizes to a Mrs. Aubrey-Moore for having been caught having a ''tete-a-tete'' with his correspondent's 14-year old daughter. Reads in part: ''…Many thanks for your kind & candid letter. It is just the sort of letter that I like most to receive -- I don't mean because it conveys unwelcome intelligence, but because it puts that intelligence so kindly and candidly -- And I am very glad that I followed, in this case, what has long been a rule with me, viz. that, when making a request that may possibly be refused, I always do it in writing -- I think it is not fair, on one's friends to ask 'viva voce' for a favour that they may very likely wish to answer after consideration, first, what answer to give, & secondly, if it be a refusal, how to express it. One thing, however, I do regret, viz. that, without in the least suspecting that you would object, I asked for, & had, a long 'tete-a-tete' with Margery. Kindly accept my apologies for this: I will never do it again. I may perhaps be excused, for never imagining that you would object to my meeting your girls 'tete-a-tete', by the fact that among the very many mothers & daughters whom I have met in the course of a long life, the mothers, who feel this objection, are not more than one or two percent of the whole number. Believe me / Sincerely yours / C.L. Dodgson''. Card-style letter measures 4.5'' x 7'' on three pages with signature on page three. Includes original envelope postmarked in Dodgson's hand. Minor toning and one fold from mailing, else near fine.
