Bid online at www.rrauction.com. Auction closes June 16.
Rare and desirable AQS, signed “Charles Dickens,” on a 4.5 sheet of Tavistock House letterhead, date January 24, 1859. Dickens pens the closing of chapter one of his classic David Copperfield. In full: “Now I lay in my basket, and my mother lay in her bed; but Betsey Trotwood Copperfield was for ever in the land of dreams and shadows, the tremendous region whence I had so lately travelled; and the light upon the window of our room shone out upon the earthly bourne of all such travellers, and the mound above the ashes and the dust that once was he, without whom I had never been.” In fine condition, with two horizontal mailing folds, very mild toning, mainly to the edges, and some light stray ink marks. Accompanied by a 2009 typed note on Boston University Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center letterhead which reads, “Deaccessioned manuscript: Charles Dickens. Text fragment from ‘David Copperfield,’ AMsS, 1/24/1859.”
To be sure, an item such as this is among the most desirable in literary collecting circles. For here is one of the world’s greatest novelists, penning a verse from one of his epic works—one that relates the birth of David Copperfield. It is one of Dickens’ most familiar and certainly most autobiographical of all his works. A rare and virtually unobtainable literary artifact!
