DS, one page, 4.5 x 7, January 10, 1870. Document signed as president of the Birmingham and Midland Institute, awarding a “Prize for Proficiency in English Grammar & Composition” to Frederick Hathaway. Nicely double suede matted and framed with a seated portrait of Dickens to an overall size of 21 x 17. In fine condition, with just a hint of scattered soiling and foxing. The Birmingham and Midland Institute was a pioneer of adult scientific and technical education (General Industrial, Commercial and Music) and today offers Arts and Science lectures, exhibitions and concerts. Dickens was the sixteenth president of the Institute, elected in 1869. This certificate was signed only five months prior to his death from a stroke.
