ALS, one page, 4.5 x 7, October 1858. Dickens writes from the Royal Hotel, Glasgow, to William Logan (1813–1879), a missionary and lecturer who shared the author’s active interest in causes related to poverty and social welfare. In full: “I am greatly obliged to you for your kind note received this morning, and for its accompanying volumes. Accept my cordial thanks. As the Christmas Carol is a favourite of ours, may I hope that you will do me the favor to come and hear it tonight, if you are not otherwise engaged.” Very faint intersecting mailing folds (one touching the “s” of “Charles”), otherwise very fine, stunningly bright condition.

Dickens was in the middle of a three-month reading tour of A Christmas Carol, making 78 appearances in more than 40 cities, when he sent this correspondence to his missionary friend. Letters in which Dickens mentions his 1843 cherished classic—let alone examples in such a superb, visually appealing state of preservation—are rare indeed.
