Charles Dickens: 2nd Issue Pickwick Papers
Charles Dickens: The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club (London: Chapman and Hall, 1837), first edition, second issue, 609 pages, modern full leather binding with gilt spine titles and decorative blind-stamped flourish, 8vo (5.5" x 8.5"). Marbled endpapers and edges. Illustrated by R. Seymour and Phiz. This copy has all the of the textual first issue points except for the rare one on page 25: the signature "E" is present at the bottom. The first issue points present include: "hodling" on page 260, line 29; the figure "7" is aligned above the other page numbers on page 267; correct readings of "inde- licate" and "inscription" on page 341; uncorrected "S. Veller" on page 342 line 5; the "F" in the headline of page 432 is imperfect. In addition, the engraved title page is in the first state, with the signpost reading "Veller" instead of "Weller". Pages 25 and 27 have the signature "E" at the bottom, consistent with the second issue. The book is in very good condition, with moderate shelf wear, mild toning to the pages with engravings, and a missing half title page. A handsome early edition of Dickens' Pickwick Papers.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
