Charles Gates Dawes: Signed First Edition of Notes as Vice President 1928-1929. (Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1935), first edition, 329 pages including Index, rebound in half leather with five raised spine bands as well as gilt spine lettering, 8vo (6" x 9"). Top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. Inscribed and signed "For my dear friend James O'Donnell Burnett from Charles G. Dawes Oct. 18th 1935" on the second front free endpaper. Dawes is generally considered one of the best public administrators to sit as vice president, though his fiery temperament and his stubbornness won him no friends in his days as a public figure. He was the first head of the Bureau of the Budget, and went on to win the Nobel Prize in 1925 for the Dawes Plan, a strategy to stabilize the German economy following World War I. Oddly, the Dawes Plan did not work, and was replaced with the Young Plan in 1929. Notes as Vice President 1928-1929 is one of nine books written by Dawes on a variety of subjects, and it is basically a daily diary of Dawes' final year as Vice President under Calvin Coolidge. Dawes would continue his career in public service as the American ambassador to the Court of St. James in Great Britain until 1932, when he receded into private business for the rest of his days. He died quietly at his Evanston home on April 23, 1951. The copy of Notes as Vice President 1928-1929 presented here is in very good condition. There is minor wear to the leather at the spine folds, and minimal edge wear besides. The textblock is tight and clean in this excellent signed copy of Dawes' intimate peak inside the life of an American vice president.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
