English naturalist and author (1809–1882) whose book explaining his theories of evolution, On the Origin of the Species by Means of Natural Selection (1859), takes a place among the most influential texts in the history of scientific thought. ALS signed “C. D.,” one page, 4.75 x 3, Mrs. C. Darwin letterhead (with Darwin crossing out the “s” in “Mrs.”), January 15. Letter to Robert Lawson Tait. In part: “Kosmos…by this post - Kindly return it to me when done with, as I have no duplicate copy. When my son returns home, I will see about some letters from Erasmus D., as I do not thunk I can spare one.” Scattered toning and soiling, and a partial postmark to top of correspondence side, otherwise fine condition.
Tait was studying medicine in Edinburgh when he read On the Origin of the Species and became an immediate Darwin disciple—much to the shock of his professors, who opposed the teachings of Darwinism. After his graduation, Tait began a long-term correspondence with Darwin, of which this letter is one example. This specific exemplar focuses on Darwin’s biography of his grandfather, Erasmus Darwin. German botanist Ernst Krause had published an essay on the elder Darwin in Kosmos, a German periodical. It was that essay that Darwin had translated into English and eventually published in 1879, adding a personal introduction. This letter not only references Darwin’s own ‘origins’ but was sent to one of his greatest champions—a surgeon who risked his reputation to enthusiastically promote Darwin’s theories.
