ANS signed “C. D.,” one page on a 4.75 x 3 postcard, postmarked 1873. Handwritten note by Charles Darwin to American abolitionist and writer Moncure Conway, in full: "Many thanks for the book kindly sent, C. D., Down." Addressed on the reverse in Darwin's hand. In very good to fine condition, with mounting remnants to the address side of the postcard. Accompanied by an unsigned original carte-de-visite portrait of Darwin by Barraud & Jerrard. Conway moved to London amidst the Civil War and lived in Europe for the rest of his life, traveling in intellectual circles; in addition to Darwin, he counted the likes of Charles Dickens, Robert Browning, Thomas Carlyle, and Charles Lyell amongst his friends.
