ALS signed “Ch. Darwin,” one page, 5 x 8, Down letterhead, November 16, 1884. Letter to a gentleman, in full: "Though the good Neapolitan work is of no use to me, I feel bound to become a subscriber, as the Zoolog. Station at Naples has done much admirable service to science. Will you therefore be so kind as to forward & pay the charge, & you send in your account whenever you think fit." In fine condition.

Founded in 1872 by Anton Dohrn, the Stazione Zoologica in Naples was devoted to research in marine biology. Darwin offered both moral and financial support to the institute, which derived its income from the rental of research space, the sale of scientific journals and specimens, and admission fees to a public aquarium. A fantastic letter in which Darwin recognizes the good work of an innovative scientific institution.
