English general (1738–1805) who fought against Washington during the American Revolution and was finally defeated at Yorktown. The crushing defeat aroused much antiwar sentiment in England, and hostilities thereafter tapered off until the final withdrawal of British troops in 1783. ALS signed “Cornwallis,” one page, 7.25 x 9.5, March 8, 1789. Cornwallis writes from Calcutta to J. Michie. In part: “Notwithstanding my respect for your character, and my very sincere regard for your nephew, it was the consideration of the public good alone that induced me to appoint him Resident at Benares. That district was declining rapidly, he has saved it, & is gaining the greatest honor to himself and to his country, for the eyes of all Hindustan are upon Benares….” Intersecting mailing folds (vertical fold to signature; pinholes at intersections), uniform toning, and light scattered soiling, otherwise fine condition. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
