English general (1738–1805) who fought against Washington during the American Revolution and was finally defeated at Yorktown. The crushing defeat aroused much antiwar sentiment in England, and hostilities thereafter tapered off until the final withdrawal of British troops in 1783. Revolutionary War–dated ALS signed "Cornwallis," one page, 7.25 x 9.5, August 19, 1782. Letter to a gentleman. In full: "I desired Col. Schutz, who is coming in a few days to my neighbourhood, to call or send to your house for the parcel of papers left for me by the Lord Advocate." Archivally double-matted and framed with a color portrait of Cornwallis and a biographical plaque to an overall size of 25 x 22. Intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, scattered soiling, and a uniform shade of mild toning, otherwise fine condition.
