<B>Declaration Signer Charles Carroll of Carrollton Autograph Letter Signed:</B></I> "<I>Ch. Carroll of Carrollton</B></I>", one page, 7.25" x 9.25", Baltimore, Maryland, February 15, 1827. A pencil docket on the verso identifies the addressee as John Paca, son of William Paca, another Maryland Signer and post-Revolutionary War Governor of the state. Carroll returns a questionnaire Paca had sent him (no longer present) with the succinct comment: "<I>Your father and myself were always on the very best terms, our political views and principals were ever in unison, we signed at the same time the declaration of Independence.</B></I>" Mentions by Signers of that signal event, however brief, are extraordinarily rare. Carroll, the survivor of the Signers, died in 1832 at the age of 95. Very neatly trimmed (barely touching a flourish in the dateline and the first letter of the salutation), old folds, but quite clean and fresh; darkly penned. This very letter sold at Sotheby's New York in May of 1990, where it fetched $10,000 plus commission. A signer of the Declaration of Independence from Maryland, Carroll was one of the wealthiest men in the colonies. A member of the state committees of correspondence and safety, he was elected to the Continental Congress. There, he successfully used his influence to change Maryland's no vote on independence. He was chosen the first Senator from Maryland, and spent his time running his business. He was the last Signer to die.
