Biography: * Charles Bragg (1931- ) was born in St. Louis, Missouri, a child of traveling Vaudevillian parents. He grew up in New York, and started a family by the time he was 21. His artistic career sprung forth after moving to California, where he began painting portraits, and giving art lessons. He was commissioned by Playboy magazine to provide humorous illustrations. His unique perspective on the human condition was soon recognized by people of all walks of life. Bragg has had solo exhibitions in San Francisco, New Orleans, Munich, and other cities. He has been the subject of a PBS documentary, Charles Bragg - One of A Kind. * Today Charles Bragg is highly acclaimed and avidly collected, and is considered to be one of the wittiest and wisest observers of contemporary life. His work has been compared to Daumier, Brueghel and Bosch, all of whom lampooned the foolish, the pompous and anybody taking themselves too seriously. His caricatures are full of sharp wit, and sometimes sharp realism. He is heralded as one of the greatest American social satire artists. *
