Political activist (1833–1891) and one of the most famous English atheists of the 19th century, known for working closely with Annie Besant. ALS signed “Bradlaugh,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, The National Reformer letterhead, May 25, 1876. Letter regarding a manuscript for the magazine. In part: “Can you kindly favor me with any short form of words which added to our 4 principles would make your suggestion effective. Mrs. Besant with whom I have talked over your letter thinks that the insertion of ‘in this world’ after the word ‘happens’ in No. 1 & the addition of the following as clause 2 would meet the case… ‘No. 2 That reason & experience are the only wise guides of man, & that Secularism therefore recognizes nothing outside of nature, or scientific in its method, utilitarian in its morality.’” In very good condition, with a rusty paperclip marks and impressions to the left corners, scattered foxing, and some discoloration near the signature.
