The Chanslor-Canfield Midway Oil Company, run by J.A. Chanslor and C.A. Canfield, began drilling operations in the Midway oil field in late 1901. Within a few short years, CCMO operated about two-thirds of the wells in the Midway district. Four years after drilling operations commenced, The Santa Fe Railway finalized the purchase of the CCMO holdings. The Santa Fe eventually merged the CCMO with Ed ward Doheny’s Petroleum Development Company, and by 1916 the two companies had produced over 36 million barrels of oil. 1901, California.
