Gupta Dynasty, Chandragupta I (305-325 CE), Gold Dinar, Sarpech Crown & Legend within Bow” type, Obv: the king standing, nimbate, facing left, wearing Indianized Sarpech Crown, king in dhoti and wearing a waist cloth (sash) hanging down from a knot, holding a longbow in his left hand and an arrow in his right, a ribbonned Garuda standard on the left field, Brahmi legend “Chandra" within the bow below the king's arm, Brahmi legend "Deva Sri (Maharajadhiraja Sri Chandraguptah)" around the field, Rev: the goddess Lakshmi, nimbate, seated on high backed throne, whose four legs are clearly visible, with her feet resting on a circular mat below, holding a diadem in her right hand and cornucopia in left hand, a tamgha on the top-left field, Brahmi legend "(Sri) Vikramah" on the right field, a dotted border around the field, 7.7g, 19.46mm, (Altekar. Bayana Hoard # Pl. IX-1/TGE, S. Kumar # Class. I-Var. B.1), attractive sharp features, boldly struck, superb quality, choice extremely fine, Extremely Rare.
Note: This intriguing numismatic specimen features King Chandragupta I adorned with an Indianized crown embellished with a Sarpech, resembling a turban. The coin bears Brahmi legends 'Chandra' within the bow, making it an extremely rare find in auction sales.While commonly attributed to Chandragupta II in Altekar's Gupta book, S. Kumar provides clarification, identifying this type as an issue of Chandragupta I.
