Chancay Vessel with Figure Holding Cup
Vessel with Figure Holding Cup
Chancay
A.D. 1000 - 1350
Ceramic with white, rust, and dark brown slip
Height 16 3/4 in. Diameter 26 3/8 in.

Three colors of slip - white, rust, and dark brown - join low-relief modeling to define the figure embodied in this vessel. A seated position is indicated by the white low relief legs, the proper left one bearing a double band at the knee area and both with ankle bands. Similar bands are on upper and lower arms and at the wrists. Fingers and toes are schematically defined, as are eyes, chinstrap, and headband. The small cup is of the same white slip as the upper half of the figure. The bold upward-moving points at the outer eye are reminiscent of the more northerly Sicán style, which may have some chronological overlap with the central coastal style known as Chancay. There are minor restorations and areas of overpaint.

Provenance
Bonhams & Butterfields, San Francisco: sale 7546E, 14 June 2004, lot 1079, p.26
