Orloff was an Eastern European artist who emigrated to Paris and studied at the Academie Russe in Montparnasse. In 1922-23, Elsie Whitaker Martinez (nicknamed "Pelican/Pellie" by Xavier Martinez), her partner Harriet Dean, and 10-year-old daughter Micaela Martinez lived in Paris (see Lot of their Paris letters and ephemera).  From the Family of Xavier Martinez (1869-1943), Elsie Whitaker Martinez (1890-1984), and Micaela Martinez DuCasse (1913-1989).
