<B>Chamba (Nigeria), Benue Valley Region</B></I><BR>Schematic Figure on an iron Spike<BR>Wood, iron<BR>Height: 14 ½ inches Width: 1 7/8 inches Depth: 1 ¾ inches<BR><BR>This abstracted columnar female figure has a full body, but the legs are indicated by notches only, and arms are high relief curves. Breasts are set low on the long torso, and the triangular-shaped head has a flaring cup-like device at its top. Facial features are minimal but indicated. Overall, however, there is a rhythmic elegance in this well-used image.<BR><BR>The figure was probably used in a farming family shrine to protect crops.<BR><BR>There is a prominent old crack in the proper left rear quadrant that curves around to end at the left "waist". The joining of the iron spike to the wood figure is slightly loose.<BR><BR>Provenance: H.
