Executed circa 1930, Deux Amants Et La Luna is one of many of Chagall's lovers. The painting was done at a time in Chagall's career when he had moved back to Paris, after having returned to Russia during WWI. Most of his paintings left in Paris were looted in the war, and the artist tried to recapture many of the paintings from memory, from photographs, and sometimes from the original. His move back to Paris marked a change in his art as he developed new artistic interests, such as nature. During this period from the 20s through the 40s, in Paris, Chagall painted various
subjects: clowns, flowers, lovers, and illustrations for Gogol's Dead Souls and the Bible. Seen in the context of these diverse themes, Deux Amants Et La Luna takes on a greater significance, as one may see these other interests in the painting. The figures mask-like faces with white faces, dark eyes, and rose-red lips having a clownish quality. The garish colors recall such clown paintings as Le piste du cirque. Deux Amants Et La Luna, however, does not capture all that the circus images capture; the
circus images, while celebrating life, also have a disturbing quality about them. Deux Amants Et La Luna retains the life-affirming tone but not the disquieting attribute. Furthermore, Deux Amants Et La Luna references the flowers that Chagall was painting concurrently in that it conveys the same tender quality. The figure on the right looks up at the central figure, who is resting a hand on the former's shoulder. The moon shines benevolently upon them. The atmospheric quality Chagall is so known for is evident.
Deux Amants Et La Luna has been owned, among others, by Mr. And Mrs. Otto Preminger; Mr. Preminger was best known for directing and
producing movies from the 1950s through the 1970s. Mr. and Mrs. Preminger lent the painting to Pasadena Museum in 1957 for 70th Anniversary Exhibition: Chagall. The Pasadena Museum, now known as the Norton Simon Museum, was founded as the Pasadena Art Institute in 1922, and exhibited 19th century American and European art. It has since been through several names and now exhibits modern art. The Acquavella Galleries of New York was founded in 1925 by Nicolas M. Acquavella, and features a variety of 19th and 20th century art. It is assumed that the Acquavella Galleries were responsible for reproducing Deux Amants Et La Luna in Franz Meyer's Marc Chagall, published in German in the 1960s and subsequently sold it to a private collector in Texas.

In the event that the buyer fails to comply with any of the above conditions or fails to pay for or take away any lot in accordance with Conditions 2 and 3, Charlton Hall Galleries, Inc., in addition to other remedies available to us and the Seller by law, including without limitation, the right to hold the buyer liable for the total purchase price, plus reasonable attorney's fees connected therewith, may at our option either (a) cancel the sale, retaining as liquidated damages all payments made by the buyer, or (b) resell the property at public auction without reserve, and the initial defaulting buyer will be liable for any deficiency, costs, including handling charges, expenses of both sales, our commission for both sales at our regular rates, and all incidental damages.
<p>9. We reserve the right, in our discretion, to execute order bids or accept telephone bids as a convenience to clients who are not present at any auctions. Such bids must be accompanied by a 25% deposit to be refunded if the bid is unsuccessful. Charlton Hall Galleries, Inc., is not responsible for any errors or omissions in connection with such absentee bids. Charlton Hall Galleries, Inc., does not guarantee the bid and assumes no responsibility for notifying an absentee bidder of the results of the auction.
<p>10. Charlton Hall Galleries, Inc., reserves the right to allow its employees to bid competitively at all auctions.

Notwithstanding any terms of the Conditions of Sale, if within 5 working days of the sale, (1) Charlton Hall Galleries, Inc. has received notice in writing from the buyer of any jewelry that the jewelry has been misdescribed as to the physical qualities of the jewelry and (2) such misdescription is confirmed by a certified letter from an appraiser satisfactory to Charlton Hall Galleries, Inc. then Charlton Hall Galleries, Inc. will set aside the sale and refund to the buyer the amount paid by the buyer for the lot. Physical qualities of the jewelry is limited to descriptions of karat (the quality of gold), weight of metal, type of stone or metal, carat (weight of stone), and cut of stone. The above provisions allowing return and refund will not be applicable upon evidence of any physical removal or tampering.
<p>12. A 5% South Carolina sales tax applies to each lot.
<p>13. A premium of 17% of the successful bid price will be added thereto and is payable by the purchaser as part of the total purchase price of each lot. REMOVAL OF ITEMS: 1. Unless different arrangements have been agreed upon, all purchases must be removed by the buyer by 5:00 P.M. on the 5th business day following the sale. Purchases not removed will be subject to a handling charge of $2.00 per day. 2.
