Chagall (1887-1985) Russian, Lithograph Cover 1963
This is the lithograph cover for a book by Marc Chagall which described his lithographs
from 1957 to 1962. The book was called Chagall Lithographe II, 1957 - 1962, published
by Andre Sauret and printed by Fernand Mourlot in 1963, and Chagall created twelve
original lithographs for the book, six in color and six in black and white, as well as the
double-page front cover here.
Chagall was a Russian artist from Belarus. He emigrated to France in 1910, just before
World War I. He was a modernist who drew inspiration from dreams. His themes
incorporated recollections of his early years in Russia, his native village, flying lovers,
mythical creatures of folklore and legend, and a love for his adopted city of Paris. He
was recognized as one of the foremost color lithographers of the 20th century.
Edition sizes for these original lithographs were not given, but it is believed they were
printed in impressions of 2000 or less. The covers are particularly scarce because
because they were used on the exterior of the book and many suffered damage. The
lithograph comes with a certificate of authenticity and clearly states that this is the cover
for the book. It is under glass and in great condition. The cover is Mourlot #391, it is
unsigned as issued.
