About the time of the Civil War locals adopted the name Central Park, but by the 1930's residents had grown tired of having their town confused with the park in Manhattan. After the establishment of a nearby state park in 1931 called Bethpage, residents successfully petitioned the postal service to change the name of the entire community from Central Park to Bethpage, which it did in 1936. The bank, which issued small notes only, is excessively rare, with just two notes known, one of which was in our "Collection of a Gentleman" sale in 1998. This is the second specimen. With the exception of that one offering no note has been available from here since a 1974 fixed price appearance, and, after this piece is sold, it may be that long again before another opportunity to obtain any note from here affords itself to the many New York and Long Island collectors. Very Good+, with a penciled number on the front that affects little.
