This Incredible, Exquisitely Carved Central European Sculpture of Saint Florian,c1706 is in Excellent Condition! Saint Florian Memorial feast day is May 4th, recognizing this Hero who among the many miracles attributed to him, Florian was said to have stopped an entire town from burning by throwing a single bucket of water on the blaze, thus his association with firefighters and those who protect us from fires including chimney sweeps. Florian was a third century officer of the arm of Emperor Diocletian, a Roman Emperor that was notorious for his violent persecution of Christians. Florian who was secretly a Christian was the military administrator of the town of Lorch (now St. Lorenz) in the province of Noricum in modern Austria. When ordered to execute a group of Christians, deciding he could no longer carry out his orders as a soldier and a Christian and thus refused professing his faith to the Governor of Noricum, Aquilinus. Efforts to persuade Florian to recant thru torture were futile, Florian died a martyr. He is one of the eight Patron Saints of Austria, the Patron of Upper Austria and of Linz as well as patronage of Poland, brewers, coppers, firefighters, chimney sweeps and soap boilers. He is invoked against bad harvests, battles, fire, floods, storms and those in danger from drowning. The Sculptures is dated 1706 AD on the back.
