1876 - The Great Western Quicksilver Mining Company was incorporated on 8 August 1872. The Cinnabar Ore Mine was on the north slope of Mount St. Helena, about 4 miles southwest of Middletown. The work was done mainly by Chinese laborers, which numbered between 200 to 250 at the height of production. A post office named QUICKSILVER was established in December 1900. At that time, there was a school, general store, butcher shop, boarding house, and 23 homes in the community. In 1911, the output of quicksilver had dwindled and the mines were abandoned. The post office was discontinued in October 1911, and any remaining families received their mail through Middletown. This document was awarded to the company in Philadelphia during the Centennial Exhibition. It measures 28" x 22" and is framed and mounted. It is in very nice condition and ready for hanging. -61287
