Celtic Coinage. Imitation of a Philip II Tetradrachm (12.00 g) minted in Pannonia, c. 100-50 BC or earlier. Head left (Apollo) wearing double-pearl diadem. Reverse: Horse and rider prancing left. Cf. Forrer (Keltische Numismatik) I, plate 28, 302-304. Toned; Extremely Fine. .

This fanciful expression of Celtic art transcends the purely numismatic. The reverse horse exhibits a hind-area expansion more resembling a hippocamp or seahorse. The use of curves is repeated for the rider's head and horse's forepart. It is difficult to artistically reconcile the design elements used in the obverse and reverse, until we recognize the continuity in the use of curves within the static construction of the obverse with their use to indicate movement on the reverse .
