Collection of six letters from 1977–78, all written in response to letters from Michael Hurwitz requesting predictions for the future; Hurwitz began gathering these celebrity replies for his infant niece and nephew’s 21st birthdays, nearly two decades away. Highlights from the letters are as follows:

James Stewart (TLS): “You are soon going to enter a new century and I hope the challenge to make it a great century for our country is deep in your heart. Our country needs strong, patriotic, industrious, God-fearing people to carry on the great work of the United States of America.”

Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.(TLS): “It would take a wiser man than I, or one with a crystal ball, to predict what the future may hold for you, or anyone… I can leave you with the same admonishment that was made to me by my father…It was a quote from ‘Hamlet’: ‘Let your own discretion be your tutor.’ I can’t think of anything wiser to tell a young man.”

Arthur Schlesinger (TLS): “I suppose the future will hold for you, as it has held for all people since the beginning of time, a life of uncertainty, adventure, testing, peril, and perhaps, with luck, a measure of fulfillment.”

Norman Lear (TLS): “It is the hope that you go through life trusting and not wary. If you go through life trusting, you may get hurt just a little bit more, but you will never miss any of the action. If you go through life a little too wary, you may not get stepped on here and there, but you will miss far more than you will avoid.”

Archibald Cox (TLS): “My wish would be that mankind have taken at least some halting steps ahead and that it will take some more halting steps in your generation, and if you are so fortunate, with your leadership.”

Karl Menninger (ALS): “I am not a prophet nor the son of a prophet & I could not presume to write a really thoughtful letter of prediction.”

In overall fine condition.
