Complete in eight octavo volumes (Volumes One through Seven, plus Index). Does not include the rare introduction in beige wrappers.<BR><BR>Original blue cloth with gilt titles. Spine skewed on Volume One, and minor shelf wear to all volumes, but otherwise a fine set of a now indispensable reference collection.<BR><BR>The sale of Thomas Streeter's immense collection of Americana books, manuscripts and more took place at Parke-Bernet Galleries in New York City between October 1967 and October 1969. Considered one of the five most important sales of the last half of the twentieth century, the Streeter catalogues are now viewed as a standard reference for anyone dealing or collecting in Americana. The volumes are profusely illustrated and indexed, with subject areas ranging from Discovery and Exploration to Cattle and the Cattle Trade to Sports and a vast array of American subjects, including many state-specific collections. An absolute essential set fit for any Americana collector's reference library.<BR><BR>"Thomas Winthrop Streeter was educated at Dartmouth College (1904) and Harvard Law School (1907). Beginning his career as a lawyer in Boston, Streeter soon moved into the business world, becoming involved with oil companies in Mexico. In 1917 he became treasurer, and later vice-president, of the American International Corporation. Streeter held other executive positions in the business and financial worlds until his retirement in 1939.<BR><BR>After 1939 Streeter devoted his time to book collecting and bibliography. He was interested in early Americana and specialized in Texana, amassing a collection which was second only to that of the University of Texas. From his years of experience Streeter compiled the five volume <I>Bibliography</B></I> <I>of Texas 1795-1845</B></I>, published in three parts. In 1957, he sold his Texas collection to Yale University, transferring the material in lots as he completed work on his bibliography. Streeter was associated with many libraries, such as the Huntington Library, the Grolier Club, and the New-York Historical Society. During the 1940s and 1950s he served as president of the Bibliographical Society of America and of the American Antiquarian Society. <BR><BR>Thomas Streeter married Ruth Cheney in 1917 and had four children.
