Auction Date:2009 Jun 24 @ 10:00 (UTC-4 : AST/EDT)
Location:6270 Este Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio, 45232, United States
lot of 65 camera-ready prints of cartoons produced by Cecile Starr between the 1930s and 1940s, signed, dated, and captioned in ink by the artist; most prints measure app. 12" x 14", housed in paper-covered folio.

According to the previous owner, Cecile Starr was a Jewish cartoonist, working primarily during the 1930s and 1940s. The majority of her work has political, religious, and risqué overtones. Unfortunately, no additional information was discovered about the cartoonist. This particular collection of work includes mainly humorous cartoons depicting the unique experiences that Starr and her husband, Harry, had while traveling abroad in Spain, Yugoslavia, Italy, and Czechoslovakia between 1936 and 1937. The group also includes five cartoons advertising Frank Brothers Shoes, which come from a series that appeared regularly during the week in the Wall Street Journal and on Saturdays in the New York Times and Chicago Tribune. The lot also includes a newspaper clipping featuring a Frank Brothers Shoes advertisement illustrated by Starr.

Condition: Some light edgewear to prints; wear to folio; else excellent.
