Cdv of Abolitionist Gerrit Smith,
Cdv of Abolitionist Gerrit Smith,<p>(1797-1874), philanthropist and supporter of numerous social programs. Smith worked his father's estate along with slaves (before New York's abolition in 1827), becoming an abolitionist for life. Although Smith seems to have "experimented" with tobacco and alcohol while at Hamilton College, he became a supporter of temperance and prohibition. He supported his cousin, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, in her work for women's rights, and gave or sold land to African American men so they could qualify to vote. Smith was closely associated with both John Brown and Frederick Douglass. Smith was a Presidential candidate in 1848, 1856, and 1860.
