Fantastic hardcover television station guest registry for the program Cavalcade of Books, 10.5 x 8.5, signed inside by approximately 840 celebrities, authors, and artists, some on affixed slips, with the signatures dating from October 28, 1956 up to March 22, 1970. Each guest has signed in, with many adding additional information or inscriptions, including the date, addresses, or book title under their signature. Others have signed multiple times, with some of the more interesting ones included below. Signers include:

Charles Schulz, who has signed the book twice, once adding small sketches of the heads of Charlie Brown and Snoopy, the second time adding a small sketch of Snoopy running on all fours;

Dr. Seuss, who has also signed twice, once signing “Dr. Seuss, (Cat in the Hat),” and signing the second time “Theo Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss), ‘How The Grinch Stole Christmas’”;

Ray Bradbury, who visited the show three times, the first time adding “Something Wicked This Way Comes,” as well as his address; the second time writing “Greetings from the Illustrated Man Himself! Who also wrote ‘Sis For Space’!—Ray Bradbury Nov. 6, 1966,” adding a sketch of the ‘illustrated man’ above his signature; and for his last entry, “Ray Bradbury—’I Sing the Body Electric’ Nov. 16th, 1969,” adding a horned and winged satanic figure;

Bill Peet, signing a total of five times, each time adding large sketches to the book, one of Kermit the Hermit; a huge signed and inscribed sketch of a rabbit and raccoon from Farewell to Shady Glade; a signed and inscribed sketch of Capyboppy; a signed and inscribed sketch of Buford the Little Bighorn; and finally a signed and inscribed sketch of Lambert the Lion;

Noted child’s author Brian Wildsmith, adding a full page signed and inscribed sketch of a Lion from one of his works.

Other signers include: Billie Burke, Thomas Mitchell, Eddie Hodges, Lowell Thomas, Eddie Cantor, Irving Stone, Art Linkletter, Irene Tedrow, Ken Murray, Sterling Hayden, Upton Sinclair, Aldous Huxley, Langston Hughes, Lillian Roth, Pappy Boyington, Edith Head, Harold Lloyd, Buster Keaton, Joseph Schieldkraut, June Havoc, Milton Berle, James Roosevelt, Groucho Marx, Keenan Wynn, Meredith Wilson, Vincent Price, Hal Holbrook, The Lennon Sisters, Sandra Gould, Steve Allen, Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, Zsa Zsa Gabor, William Peter Blatty, Julia Child, Polly Bergan, Christopher Isherwood, Rosemary DeCamp, Joel McCrea, Helen Gurley Brown, Clifton Fadiman, Jack LaLanne, Will Rogers, Jr., Adele Rogers St. Johns, Jean Renoir, Sessue Hayakawa, Will and Ariel Durant, Inger Stevens, Pauline Kael, Mel Blanc, Jacqueline Susann, adding “Valley of the Dolls,” Wally Cox, Stephen Longstreet (who has signed multiple times adding several sketches), Ken Venturi, Cornelia Otis Skinner, Kathryn Crosby, Irving Wallace, Mel Torme, and Sid Fleischman, adding a sketch of a rabbit in a magician’s top hat, writing underneath, “Mr. Mysterious & Co, By The Great Horn Spoon, The Ghost In The Noon Day Sun … More to come I hope!”

In fine condition, with some scattered light toning. Book itself rates very good, with detached front cover, missing portions of spine, and moderate surface wear to covers.

Accompanied by 16 seven-inch 33 1/3 rpm records, including two from the Cavalcade of Books, featuring interviews with Edith Head and Norman Ollestad, with the others being interviews from series on famous authors with names including Bob Hope, Joan Crawford, Basil Rathbone, William Peter Blatty, and Pierre Salinger; 29 unsigned photos, various sizes, of guests from the show, including on-set photos, including Billie Burke, Thomas Mitchell, Vincent Price, Jim Backus, Lawrence Welk, Art Linkletter, Lowell Thomas, and Roy Rogers, many posing with the show’s host, Rhea Case; a short script of an interview with Bob Hope discussing his book, I Owe Russia $1200; a page from the October 20, 1983, San Marcos Courier featuring a full page story on Case, featuring several photos from the show; an Academy of Television Arts and Sciences plaque announcing the nomination of Cavalcade of Books for Best Cultural Program in 1954; and a second Academy of Television Arts and Sciences plaque in recognition of the show’s nomination for Best Documentary or Educational Program.

The long-running educational TV program was a mainstay on Los Angeles’ KNXT. The show won a George Foster Peabody Award in 1953 for best educational television show. This volume is an exceptional ensemble never to be duplicated—neither in scope nor the quality. Yet what is perhaps most desirable are the truly stellar drawings that accompany some of the signatures—most notably, early versions of Charlie Brown and Snoopy, the familiar script of Dr. Seuss as he writes one of his most beloved titles, and Bradbury providing own ‘vision’ of the Illustrated Man. Individually, just one such item would be a heart-stopper; as part of more than 800 other signatures, the excitement level is off the charts!
