Catherine Lee’s minimalist works are exhibited worldwide since the 1980s and also experience increasing attention on the international auction market

The present aquatint etching is the fifth composition of the six-part suite ‘Tehama’ by the American artist Catherine Lee. It depicts six organic, deep black forms in a row, surrounded by a cloud of dynamic shading. Lee characteristically practices a minimalism which constantly hides any personal touch or narrative hint. She also limits her compositions to only two tones, in order to experiment with the interactions of color.



The aquatint etching is signed with pencil lower right ‘Catherine Lee’, titled with pencil lower center ‘TEHAMA V’ and numbered with pencil lower left ‘7/20‘. The paper provides a watermark ‘Somerset England’ lower right. The sheet is verso mounted at two points on a cardboard. The size of the plate is 58 x 78 cm and the sheet measures 77 x 109.5 cm. The framed work provides a label by the ‘Baukunst-Galerie, Köln’ on the verso and measures 82 x 114.5 cm.



Catherine Lee (b. 1950)

The US-American artist Catherine Lee was born in Pampa, Texas, and deals with the basic principles of defining abstract forms by using a variety of materials such as bronze, ceramic or graphite. Her works may reach monumental dimensions, but also appear in miniature format. The results of her artistic activity are mostly set as a series, while the titles usually relate to the used types of paint or turn out to be quotes from her self-written poems. Works by Catherine Lee are presented in exhibitions since the 1980s. The artist lives and works in New York. (cbo)
