Castroville. Walnut. Measures 27 1/2" tall, 27 1/2" deep, and 79 1/2" long This 19th Century neoclassical style Texas walnut daybed with unknown provenance measures 80” long, 27-1/2” tall and 27” wide and contains pine and ash as secondary woods. The high quality of workmanship resembles that of a New Braunfels cabinetmaker; however, design elements specific to this daybed point to the cabinetmakers from Austin-Fayette-Washington County area.
The most prominent features of this daybed are the cyma curved bedposts and Beidermeier style scrolling under the front bedrail. The front bedposts gently curve into the scrolled rail in a related manner as to the bedstead with New Braunfels provenance described on page 58 of “Texas Furniture”. The scrolling beneath the front bedrail resembles scrolled skirts common to Beidermeier furniture with Colorado and Brazos River Valley area provenance. A center final is no longer present on the rail. The interior portions of these bedposts are molded. Rectangular chamfered panels measuring 11” x 25-1/4” are framed between the bedposts and rails and is known as a “closed daybed”. The crest rail (or arm) is composed of three glued pieces and is slightly recessed to the post. It rounds over to match the curvature (of the bedpost). A 3/8” x 1-1/8” piece of walnut cock molding applied to the top of the bedrail and adds a decorative element to the same.
Extensive repairs were undertaken to the front leg and scrolled rail. One rear post and rear rail not original and were replaced due to prior damage. It is unknown when the restoration and refinishing was undertaken, perhaps during Mr. Grainger’s ownership.
The daybed also called a French Lounge or Grecian Couch. They were designed to be placed against the wall. GBG acquired the daybed from Burley Auction in September 2010 sale, which was consigned by the estate of Ned Grainger of Waco, TX. The late Ned Grainger was a collector of early Texas furniture.
