Cast bronze mortar with Spanish Crown and cipher with “VII” at center among laurels. The top ring is nicely engraved with banner and stamped “Etou”. The top of the mortar base is marked “SEVILLA 4 DE / OCTUBRE DE 1827” and marked around the base edges “BRONCES REFUNDIDOS Y NUEVOS DE / COBRE DE LIMA. / P.189S”. The mortar body measures approx. 16-1/4” from muzzle to end, the outside diameter approx. 10-1/4”, bore 7-1/2. Base measures approx. 9” by 17” and shows four mounting holes. Condition is good with a deep patina from being outside. This was the type mortar that was stationary mounted for harbor defense. A classic and desirable early 19th-century coastal defense piece with identifiable markings and a perfect size for a gun room. Hugh Hayes collection. Est: $3,000 - $6,000
