Prominent abolitionist leader (1810–1903) known as the “Lion of Whitehall.” An ardent supporter of Lincoln, he served as American Minister to Russia from 1862 to 1869, in which capacity he was instrumental in negotiations for the purchase of Alaska. Ink signature, “Cassius M. Clay, White Hall, Ky.,” on an off-white 3.5 x 2.25 card. Both sides of card also bear detailed collector’s notations by Charles Hedges of where and when signature was acquired. In part: “This autograph was presented to Gen’l Benj. Harrison by Mr. Clay on the occasion of his visit with Gen’l Harrison, Feby 14th, 1889…He made a social call on Gen’l Harrison…and left him this autograph which the General personally presented me.” In fine condition, with a bit of scattered light toning and soiling. A scarce and well-documented signature.
