Cased pair of percussion target/dueling pistols circa approximately 1850, blued and fluted barrels, fancy carved fruitwood stocks, in fine to excellent original condition. The pair measure approximately 16-1/2” overall with 9-1/2” barrels of approximately .50 caliber, fully rifled. The barrels are beautifully grooved and blued with engraved locks and mounts, finished in French grey or satin finish. The barrels retain 90 – 95% bright original blue, just some slight losses at the edges, some minor erosion and aging just starting. The French grey mounts show some darkening. Minor areas of light erosion and just beginning slight age. The stocks are exceptionally well carved and fluted and are in near-fine condition. The actions are crisp, the interiors and bores show little use. There are no rear sights on the pistols and the large bore size would certainly kill a man with one shot. The pair are contained within a French style royal blue velvetine-lined case, which remains in very good to near fine condition. The case contains original mold which appears unused, combination screwdriver/nipple wrench, powder dipper, powder measure, original extra nipples, fine Japaned lacquer flask, turned horn funnel, cleaning rod, driving rod, mallet of horn and wood, extra rod tip, with original compartment covers. The exterior of the case is veneered burl walnut in very good condition, with some slight scratches and minor warping to the lid. There are some areas of prying and damage to the air seal and edges to open the case which must have locked accidentally (minor). A far better than average set with beautiful contrast between the barrels, locks, and wood colors. Est.: $7,000 - $14,000.
