Cased pair of elaborately silver-mounted Georgian belt pistols converted from flintlock to percussion in their original case by Michell & Co, London. Inscribed on side plate “Captn Cooke” with variation of fleur de lis on owners plaque at wrist in original case inscribed on top plate “Captn Cooke, 10th Royal Hufsars”. The pair measure approximately 13” overall with 7” barrels of approximately .62 caliber smooth bore. We would date the pair about 1750 to 1780. Finely converted to percussion with matching engraved hammer, bolster, and safety to the original engraving on the locks. The barrel and locks show a light grey to brown patina, and are in good condition with just some minor erosion and normal aging. The pistols are nicely stocked in light colored walnut and are in very good condition with some minor losses around the edges in wedges but generally very good plus to near fine with very sharp raised scroll carving around the tangs in molding around lock and sideplate area. The pair are beautifully and ornately sterling silver mounted and show a full set of hallmarks. Hallmarks read, “IH”, the British lion, Jester head, and date letter “S”. The trigger guard shows fancy floral and Grecian urns, rolled edges and hand-engraved center. The sideplate shows piercing scrolls and flowers, with the inscription “Captn Cooke” engraved in script. The owners plaque inlayed at wrist shows stand of arms surmounted by knight’s head and is very fancy. The ramrod pipes and ramrod tip are also sterling silver. The butt caps show a raised floral design with bearded man’s face. The condition of the silver is fine to excellent with crisp edges and very little rubbing. The pair are contained within an original to-the-period oak and brass mounted case lined in green felt in English style. The case contains a proper-sized scissor mold, rod, flintlock era screwdriver, flintlock era horn flask, original compartment covers with bone-ivory pulls. The wooly felt interior shows some wear through, minor losses, normal aging, and a couple of small interior repairs at contact points. The interior of the case is generally good to very good. The exterior of the case is also good to very good with some prying at the edge to bypass the lock, where some wood is missing. Otherwise good to very good overall. The inscriptions on this pair of pistols are absolutely genuine in our opinion and should be further researched as to the identity of Captain Cooke. The Cooke family had many prominent military members, although we could not find this member of the 10th Hufsars. The silver mounts on this pair are exceptional. Est.: $7,000 - $14,000.
