16600 Aston Street
Irvine, CA
Cased Victorian Era Wilkinson & Son Percussion Double Rifle, #6280, bottom of 22'' Fine Twist barrels marked both ''25'' and ''26'' indicating .564-.571 cal., which is probably correct as the original bullet mold is retained, having a provision for hollow based projectiles; top rib marked, .577 cal. (bottom of barrel marked ''25'' and ''26'' indicating bore of .564-571 cal.) Rib also marked ''Wilkinson's Double Rifle'd Carbine, Pall Mall, London'', with one fixed and three folding leaf rear sights marked ''100'', ''200'', and ''500 yds.'', and windage adjustable front sight. Lightly scroll border engraved lockplate with dolphin-head hammers, with original smooth border engraved steel buttplate. Ramrod is present, as is two-piece rosewood cleaning rod. Original bullet mold is set up to make either hollow or solid base projectiles; spanner tool for nipples, primer feed device, Hawksley powder flask with adjustable tip for measuring 1-1/2 to 2-1/4 drams of powder, three period cap tins, and one non-original European oil bottle. All are nicely fitted in green baize lined oak case with Wilkinson & Son trade label in top lid. Condition is fine. Although approx. 160 years old, rifled barrels show little use, as do nipples or nipple bolster area. Hammer faces are clean and unpitted. Case hardening in lock remains approx. 85% vivid. Stock shows just light marks from handling and no appreciable wear. Both actions and bores are fine. Exterior of box named to O.S. Brodie, with light to moderate scuffs and scratches; interior of case with wear and discoloration to green baize material; key is present but broken. Trade label with two losses, one to the left and right edges, which encroaches little on the lion and unicorn scene. A fine early Victorian double rifle in shootable condition. Est.: $4,000-$6,000.
