Cased Pair of Gold Inlaid Austrian General Reischach Presentation Percussion Dueling Pistols -A) Aus
A) Made by Mathias Nowotny in 1852. The wooden, French-fitted, case is inlaid with a large oval brass plate engraved with the presentation: "Gevonnen zu Poroenone/ General Baron Reischach/Zen 12ten October : 1852, Zurch Rmgtr: Gt: Degenteld". The pistols have .42 caliber, smoothbore, octagon barrels with a iron, dove-tail mounted front sight. A screw adjustable rear sight is mounted on the tang. The pistols have single set-triggers and iron guards with a prominent finger spur. The European walnut stocks are wedge fastened with carved forends, checkered panels on the grips and blued buttcaps. The barrels are Damascus finished with two inlaid gold bands at the breech. The breeches and fenced bolsters are engraved with tight Germanic scrollwork on a lined background. The top flat of each barrel is engraved: "MATHIAS NOWOTNY IN WILN". The lock plates are engraved with "NOWOTNY" in a banner below the bolster. The lock plates, sides of the hammers, barrel tangs, trigger guards and buttcaps are decorated with the same tight scrollwork found on the breech and bolster. The top of each hammer is engraved with a serpent motif. All of the screw heads have delicate engraving. The barrels, hammers and lock plates have a casehardened finish and the trigger guards and buttcaps are blued. The pistols tangs are marked "I" and "II" with gold inlays. The stocks have a varnish finish. The case is lined with green velvet and has ten compartments; two of the compartments have lids with brass handles. The case contains: (1) a bright-finished, iron, round-ball, bullet mold, (2) a drum-shaped, powder flask with brass edges and horn sides, (3) a carved, ebony, screw-top percussion cap container, (4) a nipple wrench with fluted wooden handle, (5) ebony combination ramrod and mallet, (6) small brass powder measure, (7) lead pistol balls and (8) linen patches.
